چکیده

One aim of laboratory investigation in neonatal jaundice is to prevent kernicterus from occurring. Estimation of the bilirubin-binding capacity of serum is an important measurement along with total bilirubin determination. With a convenient Sephadex competitive binding procedure, KERNLUTE provides information on whether or not the neonate's bilirubin-binding capacity has been exceeded. Further testing of those serum specimens which show some residual binding capacity estimates whether the remaining bilirubin capacity is equivalent to 0 to 2.5 mg, 2.5 to 5 mg or more than 5 mg bilirubin per dl. References on the utility of this method and other more cumbersome procedures are given.

Rapid analysis of bilirubin in neonatal serum. I. The binding of bilirubin to albumin.

Evaulation of the severity of jaundice in the neonate may be determined by measuring the reserve binding capacity of serum proteins for free bilirubin. Determination of protein-bound bilirubin has been labor intensive, necessitating multiple runs on gel-permeation chromatography columns or, more recently, enzyme assays or fluorescence quenching analysis. We present a method for quantitation of ...

Albumin administration prevents neurological damage and death in a mouse model of severe neonatal hyperbilirubinemia

Therapies to prevent severe neonatal unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia and kernicterus are phototherapy and, in unresponsive cases, exchange transfusion, which has significant morbidity and mortality risks. Neurotoxicity is caused by the fraction of unconjugated bilirubin not bound to albumin (free bilirubin, Bf). Human serum albumin (HSA) administration was suggested to increase plasma bilirubin...

Faster estimation of reserve bilirubin binding capacity of serum from the neonate by thin-layer chromatography on sephadex.

Knowledge of the reserve bilirubin-binding capacity is useful in management of hyperbilirubinemia in the newborn. We describe thin-layer gel chromatography that permits measurement of this variable, with a 250-mul sample of serum, within 50 min. Single samples from four different infants can be analyzed on the same plate. The capacity of 40 sera from jaundiced and of 19 sera from nonjaundiced i...

A Comparison between Transcutaneous Bilirubin (TcB) and Total Serum Bilirubin (TSB) Measurements in Term Neonates

Background: Transcutaneous bilirubinometry (TCB) is a simple method for estimating bilirubin levels in neonates. This method is noninvasive, quick, and painless. We aimed to compare serum and cutaneous bilirubin measurements in term neonates.Method: In this descriptive cross-sectional study, 200 neonates with icter with birth weights of at least 2500 grams were studied. TCB was measured using a...

Comparing transcutaneous bilirubin versus serum bilirubin measurement using spectrophotometry for jaundice screening of full-term neonates

Background: Neonatal jaundice is an almost common problem among neonates that may cause complications such as kernicterus in severe cases. Since early diagnosis and proper treatment of neonatal jaundice is vital to prevent the related complications, it is necessary to check bilirubin before discharging the neonates. There are several evaluating and diagnostic methods to measure the level of bil...
